Catalina Island YC is one of the oldest clubs on the West Coast. In 1893, a Catalina YC was formed by the Banning Brothers, then owners of Santa Catalina Island. In 1903, the boating residents of Avalon placed pilings for a YC in the approximate location of the present Catalina Island YC. The club was quite active until the great fire of Avalon in 1915, which burned the town of Avalon and bayside facilities. Fortunately, the pilings were spared.

Coronado YC

Coronado YC was founded initially in 1913, but was short lived due to World War I. The second beginning took place April 23, 1932, when six Coronado yachtsmen leased a wing of the Hotel del Coronado Boat House and invited new members to join (dues were $10.00 a year.) Material for building slips was obtained on credit, and soon many of the 200 new members were working side by side on docks and slips for the Club.

The first few years were under the able direction of Commodore Major Ivan B. Snell. He directed the slip construction and then concentrated his efforts on the dredging of Glorietta Bay. Completion of the dredging allowed much wider use of the bay and permitted invitational events and predicted log races.

Publications - A World on the Waves

As a Chid I grew up around boats, every weekend was spent preparing the coder box for the day, making sure we all had the right clothing and the regular argument about where we were going to head off to.

We then woold travel in the car lo trie marina where the whole place would be alive with people going back and forth to their boats with supplies, or talking to the Harbour Master getting up to date information on the weather, women swapping their high heels for deck shoes whilst giving out instructions, men clearly not listening to anything the women were saying as they pulled down their baseball hats arid adjusted their sunglasses, al they wanted to do was lo get out onto the water. The marina was split into three types The fishermen, clearly defined by their general appearance and a cool box that resembled something from Fear Factor then you would have the motor cruisers, all very loud, engines running and revving from the very start of the day, loud conversations about where they would be dropping anchor for their champagne lunch and finally the sailors, serene from the start of the day to the end. If anyone thinks I am being a little unfair, let me just assure you that I was part of the motor cruisers who would look at the sailing boats and crave the peace that they offered.

The day would begin and everyone would set off. To see a sailing boat leave the harbour was. and still is. one of the most beautiful sights on the ocean The sails catch the wind, using nature as their fuel, as they cut through the water you can hear the ocean separate to allow it through. Everything about it is respectful, peaceful and Eco There is a real team spirit on a sailing boat, everyone has their job to do, rather than just one skipper and the usual argument about who would be 'steering' today. The people on the sailing boats would go about their jobs in a manner very close to a choreographed piece of ballet. No fuss just an awareness that everyone played a part, everyone was equally important.

When I discovered OCSC I spent hours going through their web site I loved it from the story that started the whole company to where it is today.
