Arundel Boat Club (ABC - UK)

Arundel Boat Club- small group members who enjoy being
afloat on the Arun Canal
Boating about...
Arundel Boat Club was formed in July/August
2006 in the Black Rabbit pub, the result of a few likeminded
people getting together to discuss how they might improve
the social/leisure use of the river Arun. The matters discussed
covered fishing,conservation, safety, environmental issues.
wildlife and fuuna but the main interest for the club is boating
and the Arundel Boat Club (ABC) wns born.
Although this happened a year ago ABC still has not been formally
set
up as a club, mainly due to a lack of active members (Treasurer/
secretary etc). Many people are Enthusiastic, but are unable
to help due to work and other commitments. Currently about
a third of members are owners of small canoes, kayaks or trailer
sized craft, another third own larger river launches, mainly
moored around the Arundel area. The remainder are non-boat
owners, Eventually it is intended that ABC eaters for all
interested members with separate days for large or small craft,
boat rallies as well as organised chartered boat trips.
Several boat rallies have already occurred. The second on
21st April was Open to all Starting at Pulborough at 8 am.
The weather was superb, and the tides perfect for the downstream
journey stopping off at Houghton for morning coffee, then
the black Rabbit for lunch before returning on the incoming
tide in the afternoon. A great day was had by all, with club-members
helping each other when it came to the handling of boats in
and out at the start and finish of the day. At other times
members meet socially at rhe Norfolk and St Mary's Gate Inn
(generally on the last Friday of The month). The Boat Club
ABC has
had the help and support of Sean O'Brien -Arundell Boatyard
Owner. It is hoped thar the members will charter a trip one
summer evening to Haughton later this year.
The Club has also had guidance from Mike Lashley, Chairman
of the local Solent and Arun branch of the Inland Waterways
Association.
He has advised on various features of organising a boat club.
There
may well be joint activities in the future, If you would like
to find out more about the IWA Solent and Arun Branch, then
