From 1840 until the advent of motorized transport, these sleek wooden boats were built and rowed in that vast forest that came to be known as the Adirondack Park.

Little is written about these guides, and even less is known about the origins of their special craft

When adventurous sportsmen and their families came to this wild forest with its many lakes, they needed a guide who had a boat.
